Day of the Dead Webquest

Nombres: Ana Maria, Pandora, y Teresa

Activity 1:

Octavio Paz writes the Mexican has no problems with death that he "... chases after it, mocks it, courts it, hugs it, sleeps with it, it is his favorite plaything and his most lasting love." In your opinion, how is this idea similar to or different from our "United States" view on death?
The Mexican opinion of death is practically opposite the view of death that most people in the United States have. In the United States, death is viewed as a terrible, dreaded, sorrowful event that brings grief upon loved ones. Death is automatically connected to tears, funerals, and emptiness.

When is All Saints Day and All Souls Day celebrated?
It is celebrated on November 1st and November 2nd.

Even though each region in Mexico celebrates Day of the Dead differently, what are things that they do have in common.
Each region celebrates with colorful decorations, the gathering of family, delicious treats, offerings, and rituals.
November 1 is reserved to remember those who died as babies or small children.
November 2 is reserved to remember adults who have passed away.

From mid-October to the first week in November, what are some of the items markets and shops stock up on?
Stores stock up on Mexican candies and flowers, especially Marigolds. They also keep decorations in stock for the altars of the dead, such as candles.

List 5 edible goodies enjoyed on Day of the Dead.
-Pan de Muerto
-Tamale steps
-Posole
-Caramel Flan
-Horchata

What are some things that are used to create an altar?
Flowers, candles, statues, pictures, incense, and vegetables are arranged around a table in order to create an altar.

What occurs on November 2?
A mass service is held in honor of the dead after the family has gathered at the gravesite of the decesased.

How do Aztecs view death?
The Aztecs viewed death as a mere continuation of their life on Earth. They did not have a fear of death, but instead they welcomed it.

In Mixquic, what takes place to celebrate Day of the Dead?
Relatives of the deceased sleep beside the graves of their family members who have died. They leave pillows and blankets out for the deceased as well.

Activity 2:

Who is la Katrina?
It is a famed Día de los Muertos artist José Guadalupe Posada's icon of death. Catrina means "a wealthy woman" and it is said in a sarcastic manner.

What are some foods that are made during Day of the Dead?
Many different foods are saved just for Day of the Dead. Calaveritas de azúcar are sugar skulls made for the Día de los Muertos. Golletes are a donught shaped bread with a pink colored sugar galze that are put on top of an altar.

What are the different types of Pan de Muertos or Bread of the Dead?
There are many different types of Pan de Muertos. It is usually sweet, and contains many eggs. It can be sprinkled with sugar on top, and many types of this bread have anise seed cooked in them. Not only the tastes of the bread vary, but also the shape. It can be in a basic round shape, or the shape of a human or animal (sometimes a rabbit’s profile).

What do children love to eat?
Children love to eat the skull candies that sometimes have their name on them.

What is the purpose of having a glass of water at the altar?
It is essential to have a glass of water at the altar because after the long journey here the souls are tired and thirsty.

In your own words, describe the cemeteries in Mexico? What do you like or dislike about the cemetery decorations?
The cemeteries in Mexico are filled with sights and scents. There are often tons of flowers and candles around the gravesites, as well as pictures of the dead. The cemeteries are re-painted and cleaned up just for Day of the Dead. Musicians also play favorite songs of the dead. Families visit the gravesites, and a priest is often nearby. I like how the graves are made bright form the candles and flowers, and how families are there paying tribute to their deceased family members.

Look at the two recipes along the right side of the page. Would you eat either one of these recipes? What do you like and do not like about each?
I would eat Cajeta Crème Brulee with Mexican Chocolate sauce because I like sweets, and the ingredients look very good. I think the chocolate sauce would go great with the crème brulee. There is nothing about this recipe that I do not like. But, I would not drink horchata because I think that the blended rice and cinnamon would not taste good in a drink.
